Fayette educator Robert Allen in Hall of Fame

Robert T. Allen Jr. of Fayette County recently was inducted as a charter member of the Georgia Agricultural Education hall of Fame.

The award was made posthumously. Jane E. Garner accepted it on his behalf during ceremonies at the Georgia Future Farmers of America Center in Covington.

The Hall of Fame is dedicated to outstanding agriculture educators. Allen was inducted along with 29 other educators as part of the second initiation of charter members.

Agriculture education has been an integral part of the education system in Georgia since the Hughes Act of 1917.

Allen, raised in Campbell County (now south Fulton), was one of two representatives from the Georgia FFA selected to be on an NBC television broadcast for having helped start vocational education in America. He received this honor while studying for a bachelor of science in agriculture degree at the University of Georgia. He also served as chancellor of the Alpha Zeta fraternity, attended the National Conclave and excelled on the fraternity's debate team.

He was actively involved with the Association of Teachers of Agriculture and assisted with the livestock exhibit program at the Macon Fair and with many FFA rallies, conventions and area and district meetings.

Allen attended several national FFA conventions in Kansas City as a leader and supervisor and was awarded the honorary Georgia planter degree for his support of the FFA.

Outside the FFA, Allen was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent as well as chairman of the Board of Deacons and Pulpit Committee for his church. He also served as the Flint River Association Sunday School superintendent.

Allen passed away in 1999.
