High School academic teams sweep divisions

For the fourth time in five years, the Fayette County High School varsity academic team has won in its division in the Griffin Regional Educational Service Agency Academic Bowl League.

Additionally, Fayette's junior varsity academic team also won its division in the league.

According to Peter Lewin, advisor to the school's teams, this is the first time that both squads have achieved a first place victory at the same time.

"This is an outstanding achievement for these teams. We have been lucky here at FCHS over the years to have dedicated students and teachers, an administration that is supportive of our activities and a county office that encourages us to perform at the national level," says Lewin.

Students on the varsity team are Herb Hatlee, Trey Alverson, Michael Spradlin and Katy Sellers, team captain. Members of the junior varsity team are Jacob Lewin, Michael Maddox, Adam Stafford and Blake Alverson, team captain. Bob Allen coaches both teams.

Approximately 20 students are involved at various levels in the academic team program. Lewin says this is a victory for all of the students as much as it is for the four top players of each team.

This win qualifies FCHS for the national Academic Bowl Competition in Chicago in May. However, since the competition falls on the same day of FCHS's graduation, the varsity team, which is made up of all seniors, will not be able to attend. In lieu of the trip to the nationals, the team was granted permission to travel to Pasadena, Calif., Feb. 21-25 to compete in a regional tournament.

"While this does not carry the prestige of a national tournament, this will serve to reward the students for their efforts," comments Lewin.

Since FCHS has qualified for national competition, the junior varsity team will go to Chicago over the Memorial Day weekend to represent the school and Fayette County. Lewin says this experience will help prepare the team for what he hopes will be a return visit to the tournament next year.
