County, solicitor square off again

The latest chapter in the contentious saga between the Coweta County Commission and Solicitor Robert Stokely unfurled Tuesday with the county criticizing the solicitor for going outside of his domain.

Stokely had sent a letter to the Commission asking it to reconsider the compensation offered law enforcement officials for appearing in court.

Stokely felt it was unfair that some municipalities paid their officers their regular salary for their court time, while Coweta County just paid a straight $25 a day for their witnesses.

Stokely wants to see the compensation raised to $75 a day.

While the commissioners said the issue needed to be studied, they did not appreciate Stokely's efforts.

"This request should come from the people affected. It's a little tiresome after a while to keep hearing from him," said Commissioner Lawrence Nelms.

Commissioner Jim McGuffey agreed the situation needs to be examined.

"We should bring everybody in line with at least what we're paying jurors," he said.

Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter has examined this issue several times during his tenure as a commissioner and county administrator and wants the issue to go through the proper channels.

"I want an issue paper triggered by the department heads," he said.

County administrator Theron Gay said staff would look into the issue and report back to the board.
