Chamber supports SPLOST
The Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce announced Wednesday that the organization will support the March 20 referendum to continue the one-cent special purpose local option sales tax for the Coweta County School System. In making the announcement, Rod Drake, chairman of the chamber's Board of Directors, said, "After careful consideration, the chamber is pleased to announce its support for the continuation of the special purpose local option sales tax. County residents can look at our educational facilities and see the positive impact the sales tax has had on our educational system." The chamber's action came after recommendations from the organization's Education Committee and Legislative Action Committee." In making the decision to support the continuation of the tax, Drake said the chamber was pleased to see that debt reduction and property tax relief are linchpins in the Board of Education's plans. "Our governmental leaders are committed to reducing the property tax burden on Coweta County homeowners, and passage of the tax will assist in these efforts," Drake said. The Chamber of Commerce supported passage of both the 1996 amendment to the Georgia Constitution, which permitted school systems to call the referendum, and passage of the one-cent special purpose local option sales tax in Coweta County. It is estimated that non-Coweta County residents will pay 25-30 percent of the revenues generated by the tax or over $25 million of the anticipated revenues of $94 million over the next five years. The referendum will be on March 20. In the meantime, the chamber will communicate its support to its members.
