Commission to study sign laws By JOHN
THOMPSON
New Coweta County Commissioner Leigh Schlumper wants to see the county work better with the cities. Early Tuesday evening, Schlumper said she'd like to see the county take another look at its landscape and sign ordinances. The commissioner is troubled by areas in the county that adjoin city property. "On one side of the road, you can do something because it's in the city, but on the other side you can't because it's in the county," she said. Schlumper would like to see cooperative efforts between the county and cities to perhaps have a uniform sign and landscape ordinance that could be modeled on Newnan's current ordinances. While the other commissioners understood Schlumper's point, they were a little reluctant to start adopting a municipality's ordinances. "I don't want to adopt an ordinance by a smaller town. We have to cover the whole county," said Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter. Commissioner Jim McGuffey agreed the situation needed studying, but said the commission should do what's best for the county. The commissioners agreed that staff should look into the issue and report back to the board.
