Planning ahead urged for severe weather
The week of Feb. 18-24 has been proclaimed "Severe Weather Awareness Week" by Gov. Roy Barnes. Barnes urges all Georgians to become more aware of safety measures to use in case severe weather should strike. In his proclamation, Barnes reminded citizens to participate in special activities during the week, such as Family Protection Day Monday, Feb. 19, and the statewide tornado drill Wednesday, Feb. 21, which will be initiated by the National Weather Service. Schools, churches, businesses, industries and local governments are encouraged to participate in the tornado drill especially. "We urge Georgians to take this time to review their family safety plans and to make sure they have a disaster supplies kit on hand in the event of severe weather," said Georgia Emergency Management Agency Director Gary W. McConnell. "Every family should also have a National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration weather radio so they can receive immediate severe weather warnings," he said.
