First Presbyterian started as a 'generic' church By CAROLYN CARY
The First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City now has more women's circles than it had for a total congregation at its beginning in 1966. It had a unique beginning, if one could call a generic church unique. It served as a worship center for all faiths until 1969, when the Baptists were able to initiate their own congregation. The Community Chapel then became initiated into the Atlanta Presbytery. Currently enjoying a membership of about 780 persons, it offers a choice to women among seven divergent church circles, some of whom meet at the church and some meet at various homes. There is a coordinating team that meets each month to discuss the Bible study lessons for that month and to seek ways to show how a caring community of women can strengthen not only the Presbyterian Church but how to be witnesses to the promise of God's kingdom. Due to the success of the program, a new men's Bible study fellowship is being planned. It will allow for interactions and fellowship among its male members. The adults this past summer traveled to Mexico for a week. Fifteen members spent their time working on a water supply and witnessing through the gospel. Camp life entertained the youth this summer through sharing their faith and finding ways to increase their awareness of God in their lives. An adult handbell choir entertains many Sunday mornings as well as the choir, which performs at the 11 a.m. service. The Rev. Dr. Don Smith serves as the church's senior pastor, a position he has held for the past 32 years. A new associate pastor has been added, the Rev. Sandi Wilmesherr. New Sunday morning worship times have been added: Sunday School is at 9:30 and 11 a.m.; worship services are also at 9:30 and 11 a.m. The 9:30 a.m. service is a contemporary worship service. Family dinners are Wednesday evenings at 5 p.m. The church is at 206 Willowbend Road and can be reached at 770-487-7757.
