Fiber optics should improve traffic

The hope is that a fiber optic system, connecting all the traffic lights on Ga. Highway 54 from the west end of Peachtree City to Flat Creek Road, will help improve traffic flow.

But there's no telling when the fiber optic link will be in place, according to Jim Williams, the city's director of developmental services. "That's going to be some time," he said.

The fiber optic system will allow the lights to be timed more appropriately and ideally, traffic flow will run smoother during peak travel times.

One of the keys to the fiber optic system is the relocation of the traffic light currently at the entrance to the Wynnmeade subdivision. The light will eventually be moved to the intersection of Hwy. 54 and the new MacDuff Parkway, but that move has been delayed because of problems such as utilities relocation.

The city will likely pay for the fiber optic connections at the lights on Hwy. 54 at the intersections of Flat Creek Road and Northlake Drive, Williams said, adding that the developers of various projects would fund the linking of the other lights to the fiber optic system.

Some of the fiber optic cables at the Flat Creek Road intersection are already in the ground near city hall, Williams said. But he wasn't sure if the city has allocated money for its portion of the fiber optic linking.
