Traffic light snag could cause problems
The Avenue at Peachtree City is expected to open March 29, but problems have cropped up with the anticipated placement of the traffic light on Ga. Highway 54 where it intersects with the entrance to the project. The Georgia Department of Transportation has withdrawn its agreement to allow the traffic light to be erected there, sources told The Citizen Wednesday. That light was a condition in the city's approval of the concept plan for The Avenue, along with other improvements to that intersection. If the light can't be put in place the matter will likely go back before the planning commission, said Jim Williams, the city's director of developmental services. The city council might also eventually get involved, he added. The requirement was for the light to be tied to the one at Hwy. 74 through a fiber optic cable, Williams said. "We've got a mess there," Williams said, later adding that he was optimistic that the DOT will eventually approve the light at the entrance to The Avenue. "If they don't, it (traffic) will get worse," Williams said. The light is to be erected at the Hwy. 54 entrance to The Avenue, which is in-between the current traffic lights at the intersections of Hwy. 74 and Huddleston Road. The Huddleston light is just across the CSX railroad bridge from the proposed location of the light for The Avenue.
