Welcome Road project is underway

The Georgia Department of Transportation has taken over final design of a culvert installation on Welcome Road at Mountain Creek.

Completion of the project has been delayed following weather setbacks and an increasing water table in the adjacent area. The redesign of the project was made necessary because the conditions in the project area resulted in an inability to create a stable roadbed with the original plans.

Cline Services Corporation of Columbus is performing the work for the DOT.

The DOT has redesigned the project to include a two-foot lift of large "surge" stone which will extend out 60 feet from the box culverts.

The surge stone will be covered by 12-inches of crushed base to provide a stable base for pavement.

Cline Services is to present a cost proposal to DOT for the needed changes. If that proposal is accepted by DOT, work on the project can continue.

When work continues it is expected that the project can be completed within one to two weeks, weather permitting.

The Coweta County Board of Commissioners has expressed continued concern over the amount of time the Welcome Road project has taken.

Welcome Road is a major thoroughfare on the western side of the county.

The Welcome Road Project is a DOT project and is not controlled locally. The Board of Commissioners expressed optimism that the project is back on track and will be completed quickly. If there are further delays, the board wants to review any options it may have to speed completion of the project to reopen Welcome Road.
