Coweta County voters will now vote on two sales tax proposals this year.

The County Commission voted unanimously Tuesday morning to call for a vote on a penny sales tax this September.

Residents are already paying Coweta County an extra penny in sales tax, but the tax ends this December. The commission wants to continue the tax and is in the process of identifying projects the tax would cover.

One project that is sure to be in the proposal is the county's new judicial center. The center is priced at nearly $30 million and would house all of the county's judicial needs in one complex.

Currently, court is being held in two different buildings, and offices are scattered throughout the county.

"This will be an extremely important vote," said Commissioner Jim McGuffey.

Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter agreed and said the September date would allow the county time to get out its message and also remind voters that they would be voting on two sales tax proposals this year.

The Coweta County Board of Education has called for a sales tax vote March 20 that would allow the system to build new facilities for the county's growing school population and also retire the system's bonded indebtedness.

County Administrator Theron Gay said his staff was busy compiling information on which projects would be included on the county's list and would report back to the commission.
