Rising Starr Symphonic Band honored at conference

Many hours of practice and hard work have paid off for the 91 members of the Rising Starr Symphonic Band.

Band members are heading to the University of Southern Mississippi tomorrow to perform for band directors and students from schools throughout the Southeast.

In March, band director Steve Tyndall sent an audition tape to the Southern Instrumental Conductors Conference, a regional conference for students and directors, conducted annually at the University of Southern Mississippi. Only four schools are selected to perform each year. Rising Starr is the only band from Georgia to be represented.

"This recognition is very exciting for the band. It's a big honor anytime you send in a tape and get invited to perform at a function," says Tyndall.

The band, which is made up of seventh and eighth grade students, will perform in Mississippi Saturday at 11 a.m. The band will play four pieces, which include the theme to "Battlestar Galactica," "Blessed are They" from a German Requiem by Brahms, "Flight of the Bumblebee" and "Metalla." Robert Bush, the brother of Principal Barbara Bakelaar, also will perform a flute solo.

"The students are the reason we have received this honor," says Tyndall. "They have worked really hard and have put up with me these last few months. I'm really proud of them."

The invitation to play at this year's Southern Instrumental Conductors Conference is just one of many awards the band has received. Last year, the band was invited to play at the University of Georgia Middle School Band Festival and it has received superiors from every festival it has competed in since the school opened. Additionally, 12 band members have been selected to audition for this year's All State Band.
