Young and old team up in writer's workshop

Children and seniors are challenging each other in a new partnership between Kedron Elementary School and Azalea Estates assisted living community.

"Linking the elderly in our community with school age children through computers and monthly visits to form a writer's workshop is the goal of this project," said April DeGennaro, third grade teacher at Kedron.

The project began with a visit from DeGennaro to the retirement community last fall, where she explained the project to residents.

Enrichment students would bring in rough drafts and read their stories to the senior adults. The seniors would then challenge the students to expand on their stories by following an outline provided by the teacher.

DeGennaro also showed a video of he students role-playing the concept.

The first meeting between children and adults was last October. Since then, they have been meeting monthly.

The writing workshops have been given grant funding by the Fayette county Schools' Mentoring Program. The project has allowed senior adults to share wisdom and experience with the children in order to enhance their educations, said DeGennaro.
