PTC officer, resident cited for bravery in fire rescue

A Peachtree City police officer and a local man were recently honored for their bravery in rescuing a handicapped citizen from an apartment fire.

Cpl. Vicki Roman and Richard Scott helped carry Sarah Ann Beasly to safety when a fire broke out in Beasly's apartment at the Harmony Village apartment complex over a month ago. Roman was off duty at the time and Scott, a maintenance employee for Harmony Village, was also on hand to help.

Beasly's granddaughter sought assistance after the fire broke out, and asked the pair for help. Beasly was confined to a recliner in the back bedroom of the apartment and was unable to leave the residence without assistance, said Peachtree City Police Chief James Murray.

Both Roman and Scott were treated for smoke inhalation after the rescue and Roman had to be taken to the hospital for treatment, Murray said.

At Thursday night's City Council meeting, Murray presented both Roman and Scott with commendations of honor for their brave act. He also presented Roman with the department's medal of valor, a rare honor.

The chief said their actions went above and beyond the call of their duties. Both Roman and Scott entered the apartment with little regard to their personal safety, he added.

"I'm proud that you wear the same uniform I do," Murray said.

Mayor Bob Lenox cited their bravery as an "act of genuine heroism in our community."
