Collins Commends Sen. Miller on Ashcroft Vote

Rep. Mac Collins has commended Georgia Sen. Zell Miller for voting to confirm former Sen. John Ashcroft as U.S. attorney general.

"When it comes to bipartisanship, Zell Miller not only talks the talk; he walks the walk," Collins said. "When he cast his vote for Ashcroft, he was representing the people of Georgia, not political bosses or special interest groups. For that kind of integrity, he deserves our appreciation."

Collins criticized opponents of Ashcroft's nominations, saying they used "scare tactics and character assassinations that simply do not hold water. They resorted to distortion, innuendo and mean-spirited attacks to falsely shape the perception of an elected official who has worked faithfully to represent his constituents," he said.

"Georgians do not like this type of politics of personal destruction," he added. "With our long, rich and complicated history, the people of Georgia have learned to judge men and women by their actions. Georgians know that a person with integrity is fully capable of fairly and effectively enforcing rules and laws including those with which they personally disagree."

Miller reflected the thinking of most Georgians, Collins added. "He then had the strength of character to vote the way Georgians think, despite the great deal of pressure to vote in lockstep with Washington's liberal establishment."

Collins had strong words for Sen. Max Cleland, who voted against Ashcroft's confirmation. "His no vote is a strong indication that he believes that individuals cannot occasionally disagree with their government, yet still abide by, and enforce, its laws," he said.
