Fayette elementary schools ranked in top 20 in national math competition

Fifth grade math honor students at Braelinn and Kedron elementary schools are currently in 12th and 16th place, respectively, in the national Mathfax competition.

Fourth grade honor students at Braelinn are in fourth place and Kedron's honor students are ranked 12th nationally. North Fayette's fourth grade math students are holding onto 17th place while Braelinn's third grade honors math class is ranked second in the national contest.

The contest involves students taking four tests. Each test is made up of 25 multi-step problems. After taking the tests, students work through each problem and discuss the solution with their teacher.

The schools are half way through the competition, having taken two tests. The next two tests are scheduled for Feb. 21 and March 21.

Approximately 1,300 schools across the nation take part in the competition, which is for students in third-12th grade. The primary advantage to this competition is that it gives teachers an educational tool to help their students excel in math.

Braelinn, Kedron and North Fayette elementary schools are the only Fayette County schools participating in the competition. At Braelinn, third, fourth and fifth grade honor math students are participating while only fourth and fifth grade honor students from Kedron are competing. North Fayette's fourth grade math classes also are taking part.

Current regional standings for the fifth grade honors division shows Braelinn and Kedron in first and third place, respectively. In the fourth grade honors division, Braelinn is ranked second and Kedron fifth. North Fayette's fourth grade students are in third place. At the third grade honors level, Braelinn is ranked first regionally.

After the final test scores are calculated, the top three students in each grade will receive certificates from Mathfax. The top student and school for each division will receive a plaque. Second, third and fourth highest scoring students in each division will receive certificates and national winners will receive plaques.
