Old movie house now God's house By CAROLYN CARY
The Fayette Community Church in the "old" movie theater in Fayetteville is probably the only one that can boast of having a popcorn machine at its entrance. You'll find it in use more than once a week. "We are a seven-day-a-week church," said pastor Mark Davenport. "We participate in sports activities, youth activities at midweek, a drama team that performs live skits on Sunday mornings that relates to the sermon that day, a praise team that is comprised of a full band, the ladies have something special going monthly, and occasionally it will be 'chick flick' night complete with a movie, popcorn and soft drinks." The old original movie theater consisted of three separate movie houses. One of them is now used for adults, one for the children's church and the third part was completely rebuilt for offices and a fellowship hall. The church has been designed to reach out to the unchurched. It wants to become known as a safe place that people can come to and feel they are in a place that speaks their language. It enjoys a membership of over 250, growing about 30 percent a year. It is a contemporary ministry called to encourage seekers to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. Its arms are open to receive those not familiar with hearing about Him. At midweek, an adult service Wednesday at 7 p.m. will hear a deeper message than on Sundays and there is more singing. At this same day and time, youth minister Brad Wilcox leads the group in Bible study, and a "Teen Kid" program, led by Neil Norman, examines a discipleship program that applies biblical truths to their daily lives. The church sponsors a Christian band, "Hyperdrive," and a concert is planned Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. There is an all-new sound system and lighting system that has been installed. Sunday morning services are at 10 a.m., with "Promiseland," a service for children, at the same time. The church is in the Fayette Place Shopping Center, 383 Fayette Place, and can be reached at 770-461-1756.
