Safety seat inspection next Sat. at PTC grocery

Local residents can have their child safety seats inspected for potential problems at the Harris Teeter in Peachtree City Saturday, Feb. 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Over 90 percent of the car seats in a recent inspection had at least one error, some of which were potentially fatal, according to qualified technicians. Some of the most dangerous problems are loose harnesses, safety seats not attached firmly to the car, infants facing the front of the car or riding in front of an air bag, and children being moved out of car seats before they are tall enough to fit properly in seats.

The safety seat checkup will be conducted by Fayette County SafeKids and it is sponsored by Harris Teeter, Chick-Fil-A, Tiny Tots and Southtowne Motor Company.

By September 1, 2002, all new vehicles and child safety seats will be equipped with the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system to simplify car seat installation and enhance safety.

For more information on car seat safety, contact the University of Georgia's occupant safety program office at 770-460-5730, ext. 5134.
