Lenox begs county commission to reconsider rezoning to halt possible commercial explosion on Hwy. 74 South

The rezoning of land south of Peachtree City on Ga. Highway 74 for a shopping center may have opened up the floodgates for similar type developments in the area, worries city Mayor Bob Lenox.

In a letter to Fayette County Commission Chairman Greg Dunn, Lenox asks the commission to reconsider the rezoning for the Starr's Mill LLC shopping center. The commission recently approved rezoning the property from A-R (agricultural-residential) so it may be used for commercial purposes.

"I implore you to reconsider your rezoning decision," Lenox wrote in the letter. "The county land use plan for this area is on the verge of being reduced to shambles."

Lenox cites in that letter several indications that property owners on Hwy. 74 and Redwine Road are preparing to jointly sell their property for commerical use and office use although it is currently zoned A-R also. Those property owners, having between 40 and 60 acres among them, have already been in contact with developers and legal counsel, the mayor wrote.

And, he added, another nearby landowner is preparing to seek a rezoning for office use.

Lenox said he has heard that several property owners have formed a group to combine their tracts of land and sell it so it may be developed commercially.

In a brief interview Wednesday, Lenox said he thought the Starr's Mill development would be a very nice shopping center. But he still thinks the rezoning went against the county's land use plan and if it stands, other property owners in the area will have the legal right to seek similar rezonings for their property.

Lenox said in the letter that he was still waiting for an answer from his original letter to Dunn asking several questions about the county's decision to rezone the Starr's Mill property.
