Water situation improving

Fayette County's water supply continues to improve this month.

Water System director Tony Parrott reports that the water level at Lake Horton is within three feet of full, and at Lake Kedron it's within two feet of full.

"If they're full when we start the summer, we're in good shape for the year," he said.

The county's ability to deliver treated water to local homes also is improving, Parrott reported. Construction on the South Fayette Water Treatment Plant, which will add up to 9 million gallons a day to the county's capability, is continuing and is on track for a scheduled opening in May, he said.

Work also continues on state and federal permits for a new Lake McIntosh reservoir, which is expected to put the county's raw water supply in good shape for the foreseeable future.

But drought continues to be a long-term problem in Fayette, said county Water Committee member Dr. George Patton, with rainfall for January still running below normal, despite recent rains.

Watering restrictions continue, with outdoor watering allowed on an odd-even schedule, 10 p.m. to 10 a.m.
