Fayette Presbyterian adapts as area changes

The Fayette Presbyterian Church, in business for over half a century, is constantly changing and adapting to keep up with growth and with the times.

It has added a children's ministry director, Kathy Stell. She conducts a worship service for the youth during the adult worship service Sunday mornings in which she uses puppetry and even karate to teach a Bible lesson. She also conducts a Wednesday evening program for this group.

There were two boards serving the church and it has been restructured into one board, with 24 members who "divvy" up the various aspects of the church life.

Not believing in keeping their talents on just a local basis, the youths raised funds to go to Asheville, N.C. this past summer and refurbish a house for a senior citizen. Taking off her old roof and putting on a new one was at the top of the list. They also did some painting and dug up old bricks on a patio that were falling apart. Shoring it up with patio stones and doing a little landscaping completed their week-long mission.

Camp Calvin in Henry County called out to the middle schoolers and they spent a week climbing ropes, swimming and worshipping along with other Presbyterian youths from the area.

Senior high students and some adults attended "Fun In The Son" at Jekyll Island, where they had a relaxing time worshipping with a thousand other senior high students.

Not to be left behind, about 30 adults attended the Montreat Music Conference in North Carolina, learning about new and appealing ways to worship through music. They returned infusing the congregation with enthusiasm to try out new ideas.

A contemporary service and Bible study is now offered Wednesdays at 7 p.m. A praise band with guitars, a base, drums, etc. plays to set the tone for learning. The program draws about 50 persons and you are welcome to join them.

Associate pastor the Rev. John Westlund has been with the congregation for just over three years.

"We are pleased," he said, "to have an interim pastor, the Rev. Bill Nesbit, serve us as we search for a permanent pastor. He brings a lot of gifts to the table and is very good at organization.

"The congregation is dedicated to our new Mission Statement, in which we proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to enrich lives, provide ministry sufficient to meet each need and to educate through biblical truths, bringing glory to His name through worship and faith in action," Westlund added.

Sunday School is at 9:30 a.m., worship service is at 10:30 a.m.; the youth meet Sunday evenings at 6 p.m. for supper, fellowship and Bible study. In the afternoon there is practice for choirs and the two handbell groups; and during the month there are small groups who meet for Bible study.

The church is at 791 Ga. Highway 92 north, and can be reached at 770-461-7147.
