Apartments to open without traffic signal

The Summit Apartments will open without a traffic light off Ga. Highway 54 at MacDuff Parkway as originally planned.

Though this could cause difficulties for Summit residents, the developer has informally agreed to post a traffic control officer at the intersection if traffic becomes a problem in the area, said Peachtree City Information Specialist Betsy Tyler.

According to a condition of the concept plan, the apartments couldn't open until the traffic light on Hwy. 54 at Wynnmeade Parkway was relocated to Hwy. 54 at MacDuff Parkway.

But under a development agreement with developers in the area, a cash bond could be posted instead.

RAM Development posted that cash bond recently, Tyler said.

The city has also issued a certificate of occupancy for the first phase of the apartments and an office, Tyler confirmed.

City Planner David Rast told the Planning Commission Monday night that the certificate of occupancy was issued for the clubhouse building and one apartment building in the 399-unit complex.

Rast said there were problems with moving the traffic light which weren't anticipated.

One of those problems is the moving of utilities to the new site, which will require much work, he added.

The engineer of the project didn't take into account the location of overhead utility lines, which will have to be raised, he said.

"It's a lot more time consuming than we originally thought," Rast said.

Although MacDuff Parkway has already been connected to the Wynnmeade subdivision, the city has not accepted that portion of MacDuff Parkway, Tyler said. That's because the city doesn't want residents of the apartment complex to cut through Wynnmeade to reach the traffic light to get onto Hwy. 54, she added.

"It will not be used as a cut through," Tyler said.

The access road off MacDuff to Wynnmeade has been barricaded so motorists may not use it.

Once the Wynnmeade traffic light is relocated to MacDuff Parkway, Wynnmeade residents will use MacDuff Parkway to gain eastbound access to Hwy. 54.
