County wells shut down By DAVE
HAMRICK
Pumps that had provided drinking water from five Fayette County-owned wells are now silent. "We've turned them all off," said Water System director Tony Parrott. The wells, which could provide up to 825,000 gallons of water per day, were shut down to give experts time to investigate complaints of bad-tasting water last month in Peachtree City Library and City Hall. Officials said corrosion in water pipes due to low pH levels may have caused the bad-tasting water. No residents have reported similar problems. Temporary loss of the water produced by the wells is not a problem for the Water System, Parrott said. "All five hadn't run with regularity in some time anyway," he said. One of the wells has been off for a year and a half, he said, and a well on Hill Road has been operated sporadically. "We don't know what we're going to do with them," said Parrott. "We'll work through this with some patience and see what we learn."
