Playground, park to bear names of chief, volunteer

Two future Peachtree City projects will bear the names of a long-time fireman and a tireless recreation volunteer when the parks finally come to fruition.

The city park to honor its volunteer firefighting force will bear the name of former Fire Chief Gerald Reed, who recently passed away after a long battle with cancer.

Also, a playground designed for children with special needs will bear the name of recreation volunteer Luther Holt, who also died recently.

The park will be erected in place of the old Leach Fire Station, which is scheduled for demolition. The playground will be located at Picnic Park.

Reed was the city's second paid firefighter to join the force after serving as a volunteer. He led the department's changeover from a small paid staff to today's force that is largely made up of full-time firefighters.

Holt was a driving force behind the initiative to raise funds for the All Children's Playground. He also served on the city's recreation commission and volunteered his time as a mentor for Fayette County Schools.

The Peachtree City Council approved a recommendation from the recreation department to officially name those facilities after Reed and Holt. The action came at council's regular meeting Thursday night.
