Water treatment study in the works By JOHN THOMPSON Southern Coweta County could soon be the site of a major wastewater treatment plant. Moreland Mayor Ed Bledsoe told the Coweta County Board of Commissioners Tuesday that he has been working with officials in Meriwether County on a proposed plant that could serve Grantville, Moreland, Lone Oak, Luthersville, a proposed industrial park straddling both counties' borders and a proposed mega-site development just outside of Moreland. Bledsoe said a $56,000 feasibility study would be needed to study the capacity of the plant and to see if it makes economic sense. Chattahoochee-Flint Regional Development Center has agreed to pay 50 percent of the study's cost and Bledsoe said Meriwether officials were in favor of paying for 25 percent. "I'm here with my hat in hand to see if the county will pay the other portion," he said. Bledsoe said the project has gotten a verbal approval from state Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor and the EPD. Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter said he favored spending the funds as long as the multi-jurisdictional development authority is the applicant for the grant. Bledsoe said that's how he sees the process proceeding. Commissioner Jim McGuffey agreed and said he knows why Meriwether County is eager to see the project move forward. "They want industry in northern Meriwether County. That's why they're excited," he said. The commission agreed to fund the study and asked Bledsoe to keep them updated on the project.
