King Day celebration planned for Jan. 15 at Starr's Mill H.S.

The Fayette Branch NAACP is planning a Jan. 15 King Day celebration beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Starr's Mill High School.

The public is invited.

Theme for the day is "Remember, celebrate, act." Celebrants are asked to remember the things the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., stood for, celebrate his legacy and act by being involved in some activity that "serves to lift up humanity,' said Edward Johnson, NAACP president.

Kellen Winslow, National Football League Hall of Fame member and former star with the San Diego Chargers, will be the master of ceremonies.

Terrell Slayton, Georgia's assistant secretary of State, is keynote speaker.

Program participants include Peachtree City Mayor Bob Lenox, Fayetteville Mayor Kenneth Steele, Peachtree City Councilwoman Annie McMenamin, Fayette school Superintendent Dr. John DeCotis and others.

Last year's event, at Peachtree City Hall, was so well attended that the celebration had to be moved to the school to accommodate a larger crowd, Johnson said.

The program will conclude at noon with a bell ringing ceremony.
