Wieland voted an exception to PTC multifamily moratorium

Peachtree City's moratorium on multi-family housing rezonings has been renewed for another year. The City Council renewed the moratorium at its meeting Thursday night, and it also elected to lift the moratorium for the planed John Wieland Homes subdivision off MacDuff Parkway (considered the Katz property). The relief from the moratorium was necessary for the subdivision since the company wants to have some townhomes in the project. Dan Fields of John Wieland Homes told council the townhomes were necessary to create more open space which had been requested by the city. Fields said the company has agreed to restrict the townhomes from becoming rental units through language in the covenants for the subdivision. Mayor Bob Lenox said the matter must now be handled by the Planning Commission, which will review the concept plan for the subdivision and make a final recommendation to council for approval or denial. The matter was handled quickly by council, but local resident Steve Brown proposed removing the planned school site from the plan and having John Wieland Homes purchase property elsewhere for the school board. Brown has formerly stated safety concerns about the potential school site on the Katz property since it is so close to the railroad which carries some hazardous materials through parts of Peachtree City, Tyrone and Fayette County. Councilman Robert Brooks said lifting the multi-family housing moratorium would allow the project to be designed with some flexibility.
