More sidewalks coming to Palmetto

By JOHN THOMPSON

Palmetto's residents will soon have more sidewalks to use for their morning strolls.

Mayor J. Clark Boddie announced Tuesday night the city is going to receive a $120,000 federal grant to build more sidewalks.

The sidewalks will run from downtown to Walnut Way to the post office.

The total project is pegged at $150,000 and the city will kick in the additional $30,000 to complete the project.

Construction will start later this year.

In other news, the council tabled a possible condemnation of a house at 535 Locke St. owned by Helen Ann Boynton Bowen.

City building inspectors had evaluated the outside of the home and said repairs would probably cost more than the house is worth.

Bowen claimed that she has not had time to get somebody out to evaluate the damage to the house.

"I've been staying with my mother, sometimes for three weeks, and just haven't had a chance to do anything," she said.

Boddie said the city had received complaints about the property, but suggested tabling the matter for another month to give Bowen more time.

The council agreed and the condemnation issue will be back on the council's agenda Feb. 5.
