Opening Today Traffic This film, directed by Steven Soderbergh, is on a lot of people's top ten lists this year. It stars newlyweds Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones and is nominated for a ton of Golden Globe Awards. It is for the adults. Rated R. Now Playing 102 Dalmations Glenn Close reprises her role as Cruella DeVil as lots of puppies cause lots of mayhem as they foil her evil plans. Rated G. All The Pretty Horses Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz star in this film directed by Billy Bob Thornton. The story deals with a cowboy on the lam in Texas, who flees to Mexico and falls in love. Rated PG-13. Cast Away Tom Hanks was amazing as a man stranded on a deserted island. He will wiin the Oscar for Best Actor and this film will captivate you. Appropriate for almost any age, though some scenes may be too intense for children, Cast Away is destined to be a classic. Rated PG-13. Dracula 2000 It says, "Wes Craven presents," but he didn't direct the film or write the script. My sister said it was awful and she likes everything Rated R. Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas A perfect holiday treat. Jim Carrey is terrific as The Grinch and Ron Howard did an amazing job in bringing Whoville to the screen. This is a must see. Rated PG. Dude, Where's My Car A Dumb and Dumber type movie with the guy who plays Kelso on That '70s Show. The plot is about a missing car and missing memories. The preview is pretty funny. Rated PG-13. Family Man Nicolas Cage stars as a man who sees what his life would be like if he had married his college sweetheart. Like It's A Wonderful Life, but without Clarence the angel. Rated PG-13. Miss Congeniality Sandra Bullock stars as an FBI agent who goes undercover on the beauty pageant circuit. I'll bet she wins, she's so darned cute. Rated PG-13. The Emperor's New Groove The Disney Christmas release about a mean emperor who gets turned into a llama. This was very funny and a nice diversion from the typical Disney film. Kids will also get a lesson in loyalty, honesty and sharing. Rated G. Unbreakable Bruce Willis re-teams with M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense) in this film about a man who was the sole survivor of a train crash. This could be really good. Rated PG-13. Vertical Limit A young man's sister is the victim of an avalanche on the dreaded mountain, K2. She has a minimal amount of time to live. Chris O'Donnell stars as the climber who will risk life and limb to save her. Gee, you think he'll do it? Rated PG-13. What Women Want Mel Gibson knows what all women are thinking. That's the premise of this film and I couldn't be less interested. It looks like Look Who's talking without the baby and I'll bet over half the jokes are about sex. A lot of people have enjoyed this, while others absolutely hated it. Rated PG-13. Also Playing Bedazzled Brendan Fraser makes a deal with the devil, played by Elizabeth Hurley. This got mixed reviews but looked amusing. Rated PG-13. Chicken Run The acclaimed animated film about chickens trying to escape a farm. Mel Gibson lends his voice to the film, proving that he also knows what chickens want. Rated G. Meet the Parents Here is my pick for a sleeper hit of the year. This film was hysterically funny and one could really feel the embarrassment of Ben Stiller's character. It was sometimes painful to watch because the situation got worse and worse. See this film you won't be disappointed. Rated PG-13. Men Of Honor Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert Deniro play SCUBA divers in the Navy. Deniro takes on a Southern accent and Gooding Jr. demands respect. This looks very serious and very good. Rated R. Red Planet Another space film about a rescue mission gone horribly wrong. On Mars, a crew finds a bunch of human killing robots out for blood. If you are a sci-fi fan, you will enjoy this and if you're not, you probably shouldn't bother. Rated PG-13. Remember The Titans A great film for football fans and non-fans alike. The plot centers on the first integrated high school football team in Virginia. Denzel Washington turns in a classy performance, as usual. Rated PG. Space Cowboys Clint Eastwood directed and stars in this film about aging astronauts heading into space. It got good reviews and looked pretty decent. Rated PG-13. The Sixth Day This Arnold Schwarzeneger film didn't last in the big theater very long at all. That probably isn't a good sign, but Ahnuld fans, like me, really don't care. Rated PG-13. The Contender If you didn't get enough political back-stabbing and treachery with the 2000 election, see this film starring Joan Allen and Gary Oldman. It got good reviews and both Allen and Oldman are terrific actors. Rated R. The Little Vampire Jonathan Lipnicki stars as a little boy who befriends a clan of vampires in Scotland. If you really don't want to take the kids to see Chicken Run, The Grinch or Emperor's New Groove, see this film. Rated PG. What Lies Beneath Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer star in this thriller that lasted a long time in the big theaters and with good reason. It was fun and scary and aimed at adults without being aimed at the lowest common denominator. Rated R.
