Report cards are in

Campbell ranks best among local elementary schools

By JOHN THOMPSON

The report card is in for South Fulton's elementary schools.

Each year, the Georgia Public Policy Foundation analyzes each of the state's schools using test scores and poverty rates to present an overview of how schools rank across the state.

This year, out of 1,086 elementary schools in the state, E.C. West Elementary in Fairburn had the highest ranking of the South Fulton schools at 489th.

Other rankings included:

Campbell Elementary 776th.

Gullatt Elementary 825th.

Palmetto Elementary 985th.

The foundation averages the math and reading scores on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. The report card also figures in the percentage of fifth grade students with scores above the 50th percentile in reading and math.

The study also looks at the poverty rate for each school. The poverty rate is determined by the number of students eligible for free or reduced lunches.

Campbell and E.C. West improved their test scores slightly from last year, while Palmetto and Gullatt dropped.

Next week, the South Fulton Citizen will examine test scores at the county's high schools and middle schools.
