Economic survey focuses on South Fulton

By JOHN THOMPSON

South Fulton's economic advancement is very much on the radar of Fulton County's leaders.

Fulton County's government is in the process of reworking the county's comprehensive economic development plan.

The county's director of economic development, Joseph Johnson Jr., recently sent out a survey to the area's leaders to find out answers to some of the county's most pressing economic concerns.

Although the survey features only six questions, half of them concern the economic viability of the South Fulton region.

The survey asks respondents to name the top three priorities the Economic Development Group should focus on in 2001 in South Fulton County.

The region has had numerous proposals in the last several years, but a majority of the growth is still occurring in north Fulton.

The survey also asks how Fulton County should approach multifamily, town houses and condominium development in South Fulton County, to insure diverse housing opportunities.

Some multifamily housing is currently available in the market, but developers want to find the best approach for further development.

The final question asks how the county should work toward attracting international companies to the region.

South Fulton has a few international companies now, but there is a much larger concentration in Fayette and Coweta counties.

During the recent election for the Fulton County Commission seat, many candidates spoke about the importance of expanding the area's industrial base.
