Holt gave much to community

As someone who is prone to burrow into the hide of those in power who act without a sense of community or more towards private or relational interests, it is time to go 180 degrees in the other direction. I am speaking of the death of Peachtree City resident Mr. Luther Holt.

Mr. Holt was the epitome of selfless devotion to others. He embodied an absolute spirit of caring for the welfare of others well beyond his own personal interests.

When Mr. Holt and his wonderful wife Gerry moved to Peachtree City they hit the ground running. They are an excellent example of how a couple in their retirement years can contribute greatly to the community. They set high standards and they worked to achieve them.

Mr. Holt had a heart for the youth of our community. He did not care about their race, creed, color, or where their families appeared on the socioeconomic ladder - he simply loved all kids. Even up to the point where his health took a turn for the worst, he was ardently working to raise funds for the proposed All Children's Playground that allows children with physical challenges to participate. It was announced in the last Planning Commission meeting that the playground would be named after Mr. Holt.

Mr. Holt had a tenacious spirit for the community issues that he believed in. He would often address the city council members at the annual council retreats with requests for funding youth related projects by saying, "I know I have said this before..." and he would make his point once again.

Mr. Holt was a wonderful husband and an excellent example to the younger men in the community like myself. When the Holts attended public meetings or were out about town I could not help but stare at them in total admiration of the loving bond that they shared. It has often times been my prayer that my wife and I could sustain such a rewarding relationship.

I cannot think of someone more representative of the term "hero." Mr. Holt had a huge heart for us all. Men of this fabric, woven of integrity, selflessness and love, deserve to have streets and public structures named in their honor. He donated his time during the later stage in his life when no one would have blamed him if he had sat on the sidelines. He served his community well because he believed in the cause with all his heart.

I had been meaning to send a donation for the playground for some time and never got around to it. I put my check in the mail today and I hope that your family will do the same. Please mail a check to Mrs. Holt (136 South Fairfield Drive, Peachtree City, GA 30269) and make it out to "City of Peachtree City" and write "All Children's Playground" on the memo line. Let's show Mrs. Holt that we applaud her husband's efforts on our behalf and that we will stand behind those who love us.

Luther Holt is a part of Peachtree City history that every child should be taught because it was Luther Holt that fought for the continued safety, welfare and inclusion of every child in Peachtree City. The legacy that Luther Holt has left us is a strong one.
