Fire destroys couple's home on Goza Road
By JOHN
MUNFORD A Fayette County couple is homeless for the holidays after a fire destroyed their manufactured home on Goza Road Tuesday night. The fire was likely started by a propane space heater that was left on, said Capt. Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Neither of the victims was at home at the time of the fire although they came home as firefighters battled the flames, Nelms said. The American Red Cross stepped in to aid the family, providing funds to purchase clothes and providing shelter in a local hotel, Nelms added. Also, Braelinn Community Services, a Christian social service organization, stepped in to provide assistance, he added. The fire was reported by a neighbor, and it took crews just four minutes to reach the scene, Nelms said. Still, only approximately a fourth of the home could be saved, he added. One firefighter suffered minor injury when he strained his back, Nelms added.
