Rec commission wants to name playground after volunteer Holt
By JOHN
MUNFORD
Peachtree City's planned playground for children with special needs will likely bear the name of the local resident who spearheaded the fund-raising campaign to build the facility. At its regular meeting Monday night, the Peachtree City Recreation Department voted to use Luther Holt's name when the playground referred to as "All Childrens Playground" is named. The naming must be approved by the City Council at a later date, Gaddo said. Holt, a volunteer who also served on the Recreation Commission, died recently and the Recreation Department staff wanted to make sure he was remembered as taking a lead role in the project, said city leisure services director Randy Gaddo. "I don't have to tell any of you about Luther's dedication to this project and his service to the city," Gaddo said. The motion to include Holt's name when the facility is eventually named passed unanimously. Gaddo said a city policy discourages citizen requests to name facilities after individuals, but the city will accept proposals from government entities like the Recreation Department. Almost $50,000 has been raised for the playground, which is the threshold for beginning the process of accepting proposals to build the facility at Picnic Park, Gaddo said. Holt's wife has expressed an interest in helping raise funds for the playground also, said commission member Earl Spell. Although the city has a policy regulating the naming of city facilities, it does allow requests for such namings to be brought forth by city staff, Gaddo said. The city cannot consider such naming requests from citizens, however, he added.
