Rezoning request withdrawn for Lexington Commons development

Bob Adams Homes officially withdrew its rezoning application for the Lexington Commons multiuse commercial project at Monday night's meeting of the Peachtree City Planning Commission.

That means the 73-acre property, at the corner of Walt Banks Road and Ga. Highway 54, will retain its current zoning of LUC-16. The project will proceed, Adams said after the meeting.

Adams said the company did not want to press the rezoning issue if it didn't stand a good chance of being approved.

"We're just going to leave it," he said. "It just seems to me the whole attitude in the city about apartments is so negative. Even when they're upscale, people can't get past that."

The Planning Commission unanimously voted to accept the withdrawal of the rezoning application.

Developers on the project had sought to increase the residential units in Lexington Commons from 160 to 260, including lofts and town homes. Also, the developers wanted to have 68,000 square feet where property owners could choose to live or work.

Both those changes would result in a reduction of the overall commercial space at Lexington Commons. According to the company, retail space would have been reduced by 128,000 square feet while office space would have shrunk by 38,000 square feet.
