United Way falling short of 2000 goal in Fayette County
Fayette County's contributions to United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta are falling short of goal, and local volunteer chairman Mike Jablonski is challenging residents not to let that happen. Overall, the metro Atlanta organization is well on its way to achieving a fund-raising goal for the 2000 campaign of $82.5 million, and celebrated that fact during a rally Friday, said Jablonski. "That goal is a significant achievement for all of us, as we in Fayette County will share in the distributions," he said. But Fayette is falling about $50,000 short of its $250,000 goal, he added. The United Way of Fayette County raised $250,000 last year as part of the metropolitan Atlanta campaign. "Our Fayette County community received back almost $900,000 in direct distributions to programs we all know," he added. Among local programs receiving grants are the Fayette Youth Protection Homes, Fayette Samaritans, Joseph Sams School, Fayette Senior Services, FRIENDS Mentoring Program, the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts. "In years past, Fayette County has had a great reputation for giving," he said. "There are many industries with generous employees and management, and other groups in this great community of ours that have done a fantastic job to help our local United Way campaign get where it is today." But, he added, "By falling short, we are essentially saying that Fayette County doesn't need the return on investment that our association with the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta gives us. We are saying that there is waning support in our own community for the wonderful programs that operate here. "There is no excuse for dropping the ball as a community when we are expected to carry our fair share of the load," he added. Fayette County has a population of over 92,000 people, and a United Way goal of $250,000, or $2.72 per person, Jablonski pointed out. More than 8,000 citizens of Fayette were served by United Way-supported programs last year, he added. "We need to do our share to insure that these needed services are provided to our community," he said. To help out, make a check payable to the United Way of Fayette County.
