Services set Thurs. for Luther Holt, recreation volunteer, supporter

Peachtree City resident Luther Holt, who was recently named one of the state's top recreation volunteers, died Saturday, Dec. 9.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home on Senoia Road in Peachtree City.

Holt is survived by his wife, Geraldine, a son, Michael Holt, and three grandchildren.

Holt was recently named the Volunteer of the Year by the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association among volunteers in cities or counties serving a population between 20,000 and 70,000. Recently, Holt has spearheaded a fund-raising drive for the All Children's Playground, which needs more than $150,000 to build a special needs accessible playground at Picnic Park.

Holt has served on the Peachtree City Recreation Commission since 1995 and was recently reappointed to another term by the City Council.

Holt's career in recreation began 47 years ago with the Lexington, Ky. YMCA. When he retired in 1993, he was the assistant superintendent of recreation for the city of Detroit.

Locally, Holt also volunteered as a mentor through the county school system, as chairman of the Fayette Community Hospital's Hospitality Committee and as vice-chairman of the Big Bethel A.M.E. Church Credit Union.

Those who desire may make contributions in Holt's memory to the All Children's Playground fund in care of the Peachtree City Recreation Department, 191 McIntosh Trail, Peachtree City 30269.
