Wieland seeks to lift multifamily moratorium
By JOHN MUNFORD
Since the latest concept plan for the John Wieland Homes subdivision on the Katz property contains 110 town homes, the Peachtree City Council will have to decide whether to lift the multifamily housing moratorium for the project. At its meeting Thursday night, council agreed to have a public hearing on lifting the moratorium for the 350-unit, 181-acre property, part of which lies in unincorporated Fayette County. The hearing will be at council's first meeting in January. Dan Fields of John Wieland Homes said the town homes were included in the redesign of the subdivision that was requested by the city. The new plan has more open spaces and park areas, which the city wanted, he added. The company considers the town homes as single-family residential units, because two homes share one single wall, Fields said. But town homes are forbidden under the multifamily housing moratorium. The town homes will be sold, not rented, Fields told council. He also said John Wieland Homes would commit to using covenants to restrict the rental of the town homes. "We're asking you to support a land product that adds value to Peachtree City," Fields said, adding that the expected price range in the subdivision would begin in the $200,000 area. Fields said the company is not asking council to approve a higher density for the project. He also noted that the company is preparing to issue a deed to the school board for the land on the parcel that is planned for an elementary school. That way, parents and children in the area will have the opportunity to walk to school, Fields added. Since the moratorium is part of the zoning ordinance, a public hearing must be scheduled on the matter before council can make a decision on lifting it.
