Teachers get recognition

The Fulton County Board of Education had a busy November board meeting.

Some of the items discussed during the meeting included:

F The Spotlight on Achievement. November's spotlight featured the Arch Education Network Project at Chattahoochee High School.

Working with several environmental, governmental and engineering firms, students gain experience in grant writing, water analysis and water quality issues.

F Outstanding Teachers. Several teachers were honored, including:

· Oak Knoll ES teacher Hazel Simms one of 31 teachers selected for NASA Urban Community Enrichment Summer Teacher Workshop at Oklahoma State University.

· Seaborn Lee ES teacher Brenda Stiggers one of 100 local women honored for community service as part of Eckerd's Salute to Women.

· Milton High teacher Donna Robinson named the 2000 Secondary Business Teacher of the Year by the Georgia Business Education Association.

· Centennial High teacher Susan Kokoszka Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Educator of Distinction Award winner.

· Corporate friends. The Board of Education honored the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta as a Friend of Public Education. A donation from the Billi and Bernie Foundation allowed United Way to present a $500,000 grant to the Continuing Education Department for the After School Odyssey Enrichment Program.

· New policys. Board members received a recommendation from high school principals calling for progressive consequences for student athletes charged with drug and alcohol violations. This item is a revision to the Student Athletic Handbook and does not require board approval.

· A new program. Information was shared with the board on the School to School Exchange Program with Great Britain. The program will begin 2001-2002 with 10-14 teachers, principals and administrative staff from identified schools.

· Job descriptions. The board approved job descriptions for two previously approved positions, coordinator of continuous improvement and executive director of alternative education.

· Tax money. The board learned that $289 million had been received during 37 months of sales tax collection. This amount is in line with the original projections.
