New stoplight set to operate Wednesday

Get ready to stop again. Sort of, anyway.

Peachtree City's newest traffic light on Ga. Highway 54, at the intersection of Willowbend and Flat Creek roads, is scheduled to be fully activated by Wednesday, said City Engineer Troy Besseche. The light began flashing yesterday to allow motorists to become aware of the light's presence before it becomes fully operational.

The signal will be programmed to maximize the green time on Hwy. 54, turning green for side streets only when an appropriate gap opens in traffic on the highway, according to city officials.

The signal on Hwy. 54 at Northlake Drive and Willowbend Road will soon be replaced and that light will be linked to the Willowbend/Flat Creek Road signal via a fiber optic system.

Eventually, the city plans for that fiber optic system to control all the traffic lights from the new signal westward to Coweta County.

The new light is one of several planned traffic light changes for the stretch of Hwy. 54 as it extends westward towards the Coweta County line.

A new traffic light will likely be erected in March when The Avenue retail center opens up.

That signal will be on Hwy. 54 at the intersection of Marketplace Blvd., and it must be operational before the development is opened according to an agreement between the developers and the city.

Also in the future is the scheduled relocation of the traffic light at Wynnmeade Parkway, which will be moved to the new MacDuff Parkway.
