School board may vote for new SPLOST

Coweta County residents could soon be voting on another special purpose local option sales tax for the school system.

Superintendent of Education Richard Brooks confirmed this week that the Board of Education will discuss a proposal at next week's meeting to extend the current SPLOST.

"It would be used for adding classrooms and schools," he said.

County residents are currently paying the extra penny on the dollar for new schools that have been built in the last five years.

School officials are currently looking at a site for a fine arts facility, which was one of the projects on the last SPLOST approved by the voters.

If the board decides to call for a SPLOST referendum, Brooks said there are only four months when the vote can be conducted: March, June, September and November.

Residents who want to see the school board discussion on the matter should head to Newnan Crossing Elementary School next Tuesday at 7 p.m. to watch the discussion.
