After lenghty delay, PTC firefighters begin to move into new Leach station

Peachtree City's newest fire station is nearly complete, and officials hope to move into the structure in the next few weeks.

The new Leach Fire Station is almost double the size of the current one at over 9,000 square feet, said Fire Chief Stony Lohr. The contract price for the new facility was just over $1.17 million, said City Engineer Troy Besseche.

The building was originally scheduled to be completed in May, but several problems caused delays including roof leaks that had to be repaired, said Besseche. The city also had the concrete driveway tested and it was found no repairs are necessary, he added.

Part of the delay was also due to the length of time it took for the punch list to be completed, Besseche added.

The problems were resolved with the general contractor, Burcher Inc., and this week telephone crews and audio-visual crews installed equipment at the new station house, Lohr said.

The audio-visual equipment will be installed in the department's new training room that's a part of the new Leach station, Lohr said. The beds for the crew quarters were delivered Wednesday, he added.

Firefighters are already moving some equipment to the new station, which is located just behind the current Leach station. Besseche said it could be two to three weeks before the department can fully move into the facility.

Lohr said the firefighters are happy to be able to move into their new home.

"It's a good-looking building," Lohr said. "It's better than anything else we've ever had."
