Hwy. 54 cart path bridge repairs wrapping up; may open in 2 weeks

Repairs to the cart path bridge over Ga. Highway 54 near Northlake Drive are nearly complete, and the bridge will likely be re-opened the week of Dec. 11, said Peachtree City Engineer Troy Besseche. Crews from Bellamy Brothers of Ellenwood have been installing new steel approach spans to replace the decaying wooden approach spans. The bridge was closed to cart traffic in May when a resident reported feeling the bridge vibrate while driving over it. An inspection of the bridge at the time revealed there were problems with one of the approach spans. Besseche said the steel spans should hold up longer than wooden models. Wednesday, workers poured the concrete deck for the northernmost approach span, and the majority of the work should be completed by today or Monday, Besseche said. But several minor repairs to the bridge piers must also be taken care of before the bridge is opened again to traffic, Besseche added. There won't likely be a ceremony to re-open the bridge, but Besseche said he thinks citizens will be happy to have access to the bridge back. Since the bridge was closed to cart traffic, residents on golf carts have had to cross Hwy. 54 using a pedestrian signal at Northlake Drive and Willowbend Road. The city had hoped to have the bridge re-opened before now, but delivery of the steel spans from Steadfast Bridges in Fort Payne, Ala. were delayed several months. The entire repair project was estimated to cost approximately $170,000.
