East Coweta High School's success this fall is not limited to just the gridiron.

Two East Coweta High School students recently walked away with honors in the county Voice of Democracy audio/essay competition.

Junior Leslie Yeager placed first in the county, while Drew Nations finished third. Yeager won $100 and a certificate and will now compete at the district level.

This year's topic is "What Price is Freedom?"

The program began in 1946 and was originally sponsored by the National Association of Broadcasters.

The VFW became involved in assisting the program in the 1950s and took over as primary sponsors in 1961. Across the country, 56 winners this years will receive scholarships totalling more than $139,500.

The finals take place in Washington, D.C. when the judges listen to the tapes from the winners of each state.
