Septic system causing problems

A new spray application septic system is causing quite a stink in the northern part of Coweta County.

During last week's County Commission meeting, commissioners got an earful from angry residents who don't want the system near their homes.

Nearly two years ago, the board approved a special use purpose for RAM Development to build a spray application system on Grover Road to deal with the wastewater that would be created by impending development.

Several years ago, apartments had been approved in the area and new convenience stores are starting to pop up.

The commissioners reiterated that the matter is out of their hands, since the state EPD would have final approval on the project.

Many residents were concerned that the plant would be within 2,500 feet of their drinking wells.

"You're going to kill some kids," said Donna Barry.

But the commissioners said at the time of approval they did not know drinking wells were that close to the project. They instructed staff to look through the records to see if RAM had made any mention of the closeness of the wells.

The commissioners also said they will make sure that EPD looks closely at the project, but had no doubt EPD would do its job.

Last month, officials from RAM approached the board about extending sewer service down to some of the major businesses at the busy Thomas Crossroads intersection.

The commissioners refused to allow the developers any more capacity for their system and said there was no need for the developers to request anything else that would deviate from the special use permit.

The commission pledged to keep in touch with the residents and let them know of any decisions EPD makes.
