Students can compete in science symposium
The University of Georgia's Office of Academic Special Programs is inviting area high school students to participate in the annual Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. The event will be Feb. 25-27 at the university's Student Tate Center in Athens. Entry deadline is Jan. 12. The Junior Science and Humanities Symposium is a national oral science presentation competition for high school students. Georgia participates as a sponsor in one of 50 state or regional symposia supported by the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force research programs. More than 10,000 students from secondary schools in 50 states, Puerto Rico and, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Defense, schools of Europe and the Pacific, participate in the symposia administered by universities. Each year, approximately 50 Georgia students are selected by science professionals to present their original science projects in front of judges at the state competition in Athens. Approximately 50 additional students are invited to participate as observers and to present their science in poster form. One student selected from each of the regional levels wins a $4,000 scholarship. This student and four selected observers receive all-expense paid trips to the national competition where eight $16,000, eight $6,000 and eight $2,000 scholarships and other prizes are awarded to the top presenters.
