ARC sets conference on health care staffing
The Atlanta Regional Commission, in cooperation with the Georgia Council on Aging and more than 30 agencies and organizations, presents "Staffing Crisis - Staffing Solutions," a forum to offer solutions for problems in long-term care, will be Wednesday, Dec. 6 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Loudermilk Center for the Regional Community. The program will feature nationally recognized leaders on the forefront of innovative approaches designed to strengthen the link between higher quality job situations and higher quality care. "As a leader in setting standards across the continuum of care for older Georgians, the Georgia Association of Homes and Services for the Aging is extremely concerned about the national staffing crisis," said Walter Coffey, GAHSA president. "Our members provide exceptional service for older Georgians and we are thrilled to participate in this opportunity to identify and prioritize solutions for our state that will not only meet the needs of older Georgians, but exceed their expectations." Speakers include Barbara Frank of The Paraprofessional Health Care Institute; Diane Findley, Iowa Caregivers Association; Mary Ann Kehoe, Good Shepherd Services; Robyn Stone, Institute for the Future of Aging Services and the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. Presenters will talk about improving care by enhancing the work environment for front-line workers and how to address unmet needs including lack of benefits, dependent care, transportation and career ladders. They also will provide proven methods of addressing cultural barriers, lack of training and problems with staff supervision. "Not only will experts provide their insight, but this forum also allows for the participants to share their perspectives and suggestions for expanding and enhancing long term care staffing issues," said Cheryll Schramm, chief of the Aging Division at the Atlanta Regional Commission. Russ Toal, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Community Health, and Michael Thurmond, commissioner of the Department of Labor, also will discuss Georgia initiatives to address staffing concerns.
