Local son honored by radio group

Fayette son John Talbert, 1968-99, recently was honored by WSB Radio for his design and development of the station's new studios, praising his "attention to detail and standard of excellence."

Talbert was born in Illinois and his family moved to Fayette County in 1985. His senior year in high school was at Fayette County High, where he was influenced in radio by teacher Catherine Hazelwood. He was on the air both at the high school and at a Griffin radio station.

While attending Georgia State University, he worked for WCNN in Atlanta and was graduated from Southern Polytechnic Institute, where a scholarship in his name is being initiated by WSB.

He worked in Alaska in public radio, returned to WCNN and from 1997 until his death in September 1999 was director of technical operations for the WSB Radio Group.

He suffered a heart attack while inspecting a transmitter site.

Attending the recent dedication of a plaque in his honor were his parents, Dave and Marilyn Talbert of Fayetteville, his sister, Erin Cott of Newnan and brother Andrew Talbert of Fayetteville.
