Sams School receives grant from foundation
The Joseph Sams School has a received a $5,000 grant from the Sundown Fund of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta to support its Reverse Inclusion program. Lana Carr, executive director of the Sams School, said the funds would be used to pilot a two-day-a-week reverse inclusion program in the older preschool classes. "This funding will allow us to include typical peers in our program, which provides services for children with special needs. By including this program, our children are given the opportunity to learn communication, play skills and greater independence from their typical peers," Carr said. The Joseph Sams School, previously known as The Early Years, was started in 1984 by a group of parents seeking preschool intervention for their young children with disabilities. Today it is the only privately operated, nonprofit, fully accredited school of its kind serving children ages 2 through 15 in the metro Atlanta area. The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta was founded in 1951 and educates donors and their families on critical issues facing the region, and connects them with nonprofit organizations that match their interests. With more than $300 million in assets, the foundation is one of the largest community foundations in the nation.
