Local CAP gets close look at military carrier, aircraft

Ten cadets and three senior members of the Peachtree City Civil Air Patrol were recently treated to flights on an Air Force C-17 Globemaster jet.

Members of the CAP squadron flew in the Air Force Base, South Carolina. Every member got to ride in the cockpit, sitting in inspectors' seats right behind the pilots.

Cadets in the group were Athena Anderson of Fayetteville, Jacob Breedlove of Whitesburg, Warren Deeds of Sharpsburg, Richard Gosch of Newnan, David Hunter of Sharpsburg, Brett Matchceck of Peachtree City, Stephanie

Patterson of Fayetteville, John Waters of Peachtree City, Ben Willis of Sharpsburg and Joshua Hawkins of Fayetteville.

Squadron senior member escorts were Lt. Col. Phil Bowden of Locust Grove, and senior members Mike Jones of Stockbridge and Teresa Patterson of Fayetteville.

In Charleston for the weekend, the CAP members spent half a day climbing all over the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, which saw service from 1943 to 1970, and which is now a floating naval museum. The group also took a bus tour of The Citadel, the military academy of the South, and later enjoyed walking around the historic Charleston city center.

Civil Air Patrol is the all volunteer auxiliary of the U. S. Air Force. Prospective cadets are eligible to join when they reach the sixth grade or age 11. The Peachtree City Falcon Field Composite Squadron meets every Thursday at 7 p.m. at McIntosh High School in Peachtree City.

Interested young people and adults are invited to visit anytime.
